MI5 offers three working models balancing security and flexibility: on-site roles for tasks requiring secure facilities and close collaboration; hybrid roles combining office and remote work with scheduled in-person days; and rare remote roles with strict security protocols. Eligibility depends on clearance, role sensitivity, operational needs, and approval from M’s office and HR, ensuring protection of intelligence and staff well-being.
MI5 offers three distinct working models, each designed to deliver a careful balance between operational security and workplace flexibility. These models support the agency’s mission while acknowledging that different roles have different needs — both in terms of sensitivity and human collaboration.
On-site roles
The first and most traditional model is on-site. These roles require employees to work primarily from an MI5 office. Why? Because some tasks can only be done inside secure facilities, using systems that are never connected to the outside world. These roles often involve classified intelligence, live operational planning, or work that demands close in-person collaboration. For many positions, being physically present is not just helpful — it is essential to maintaining both the quality of work and the agency’s security standards.
Hybrid roles
Next, we have hybrid roles — a structured blend of office and remote work. Typically, employees in hybrid positions spend two or three days per week on-site, with the remaining time working remotely. The exact schedule is agreed in advance to ensure continuity, team coordination and access to secure systems when needed. This model offers flexibility while still preserving the face-to-face collaboration that fuels much of MI5’s operational effectiveness. It is the preferred option for many roles that require regular coordination but are not tightly bound to secure facilities every day.
Remote roles
The third model — and by far the most exceptional — is remote work. These roles are rare and reserved only for positions where operational sensitivity allows for full-time off-site work. Even then, strict protocols apply. Staff must use agency-issued secure equipment, with carefully monitored communication channels and systems designed to prevent any data leakage. Remote roles are granted only when the work can be performed safely outside MI5 premises without compromising national security.
Eligibility and approval
Eligibility for any working model depends on several factors:
Security clearance level
Nature and sensitivity of the role
Operational requirements
Formal approval availability
Approval involves coordination between M’s office, which oversees operational decision-making, and Human Resources, which manages personnel policies and compliance. Together, they ensure that every working arrangement protects not only MI5’s intelligence and operations, but also the well-being and effectiveness of its people.
In the end, MI5’s working models are not simply about where you work — they are about how security, collaboration and flexibility come together to support one of the most critical missions in the country.
